Westmoreland Jr. Livestock Sale
The Westmoreland Jr. Livestock
Sale offers a world of "REAL WORLD" experience for the 4-H and
FFA members that participate in it. The animals that are marketed through
this sale are products of a year long process of learning. The youth must
make several business decisions during the project year.
They must first decide how
much money they are willing to spend on a project. Then they must visit
several producers to find an animal that meets their taste and budget.
This process can take several weeks and may expose the youth to several
different management and marketing techniques. They may buy the animal
from either a private producer or from a consignment sale.
Then the youth must purchase
feed and supplies to keep the animal growing and healthy throughout
the year. This is the production aspect of the project. While the youth
are growing this animal they are gaining valuable skills such as: Decision
making, cost analysis, production, resource management, and marketing.
These youth also learn responsiblity, common sense, and cooperation.
These are time honored values which are useful through out life.
Sale day is when the youth
may realize the benefits of their efforts. If the youth have approached
several prospective buyers, advertised their quality product and their
dedication to hard work they may see the benefits. These youth members
have put in months of work and may see a premium on sale day, but the
lessons they have learned will be priceless through out their lives.
